Ed Mirvish was the son of Lithuanian Jewish immigrants who moved to Toronto in 1923. He quit school at age 15 to take over the family grocery store. When he died in 2007 at age 92, he owned the country's largest bargain store - Honest Eds and 3 theatres - Royal Alexandra Theatre, Princess of Wales Theatre and London, UK's Old Vic Theatre.

Mirvish brought major Broadway productions to Toronto including Hair, Les Miserables and The Lion King.
