Wireless Toronto is a not-for-profit community group with the aim of bringing free wireless internet access in public and public-accessible spaces in Toronto.

Businesses and groups, parks, cafes, community centres, libraries, restaurants, malls, etc. can sign up to become a member of Wireless Toronto and offer Wi Fi access. This network membership fee is $50 a year and includes 24/7 monitoring of the hotspot status, technical support for visitors/customers, a listing on the Wireless Toronto hotspot list (web and print), and stickers indicating that venue is a Wireless Toronto hotspot. The wireless router which powers the network (Linksys WRT54GL) costs about $70.

Supporting Wireless Toronto

Members of the community can support Wireless Toronto by donation (via PayPal), or by getting involved with the group:

  • Help maintain a hotspot that you live near. e.g. fix it if it goes down, and helping out users who are having trouble connecting.
  • Find new places for to set up WirelessToronto hotspots
  • Create/find content for community pages: Put up locally-oriented information on the site's community page
  • Technical assistance: Help install string up cables, install routers, software experience with PHP, PostgreSQL, embedded Linux, RSS feeds, content management systems, or GIS etc
